A mesmeric, gorgeous new LP of experimental and traditional acoustic psych-folk songs by the Estonian duo of Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi, who write, sing and play facing each other, primarily on the kannel or (Estonian zither), using texts and repetitive motifs of runo song, oral poetry specific to the Baltic Finnic languages. across a title that translates as “weather report”, exploring the deep connections between weather and emotion. The short Intro track builds on the scratchy, dying notes of their 2021 EP, Kulla Kerguseks (From the Lightness of Gold) to bring a sense of evolution and continuity before we embark on an exquisite journey of syncopated rhythms, changing time signatures and vocal phrases, sometimes with guests, from Udu (Fog), to Vastlalaul (The Sledding Song) with the deeper voice of guest Puuluup in a number which begins slowly, but then speeds up jauntily as the sled pushes through the snow, joined by fiddle and ever more complex interweaving voices. It really creates a sense of joy an landscape speeding by. Kuuse koht (Spruce Place) brings dreamy vocals on a number dominated by the syncopated strumming and gentle hammering of the zither, with other highlights including the sunlit beautiful play of the zither and vocals on Hobusemäng (Horse Game), guest guitarist Erki Pärnoja’s solos on the women’s wordless melodies on Interlude, EiK 2509’s spoken-word additions to Enne Ööd (Nightfall), the more melancholy Vilud Ilmad (Gloomy Weather), to the hot, sky-filled handclaps of Suvi Rannas (Summer on the Beach). Overall, a beautifully evocative, vivid release of 12 exquisitely delicate and vivacious tracks capturing the climate and changing moods of the unseen Baltic landscape. Also released on their website.
